Welcome to Tōu Ake Mana.

We all understand the importance of whanaungatanga – the connections and relationships that bind us. But what makes a relationship truly meaningful? And how can we create spaces where whanaungatanga can grow and thrive? This website is designed to help answer those questions. Drawing on research with rangatahi and kaimahi, we’ve developed tools and insights to support conversations about what really makes a difference when working together. We refer to this approach as whanaungatanga, relationship-based practice (RBP), or relational practice.

Inside, you’ll find our version of a kete rauemi – a resource kit for kaimahi and whānau – focused on building strong, impactful relationships with rangatahi. These resources are grounded in theory, research findings, and our sibling frameworks PARTH and Moana.

Whether you’re a whānau member, youth worker, teacher, social worker, health professional, caregiver, manager, advocate, or youth aid officer, these rauemi are here to support your mahi. Explore each tab to discover the different resource sets and how they can help you strengthen whanaungatanga in your work. Start with the Tōu Ake Mana tab in the top banner and take a look around.

The research was made possible by funding from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and this site was created as part of a research programme (MAUX2006) funded by MBIE. We thank them for their support.

Tōu Ake Mana is a Māori centred relational framework

that places rangatahi and their whānau at the heart of practice. It is grounded in Te Ao Māori, kaupapa Māori, and whakaaro Māori, guiding practice, research, care, and wellbeing.

The framework upholds the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, emphasising the responsibilities of all Tiriti partners to foster respectful and meaningful relationships.

At its core, Tōu Ake Mana is built on the foundation of whakawhanaungatanga—the process of establishing and nurturing relationships. It weaves in key Māori values such as:

  • Manaakitanga – caring for and uplifting others
  • Wairua – recognising the importance of spiritual wellbeing
  • Mauri – acknowledging the life force and synergy within all things

The approach seeks to engage kaimahi, rangatahi, and whānau in a way that enhances mana across multiple dimensions:
Mana Māori, Mana Atua, Mana Taiao, Mana Tangata, and Mana Motuhake.

Youthsay & Relational Resources for Change

Youthsay is the home of resources for kaimahi about how to build relationships with rangatahi that make a lasting difference. It contains our sibling frameworks, Tōu Ake Mana, PARTH and Moana. PARTH was the original framework that came out of the Pathways to Resilience and Youth Transitions Research (Massey University). This was followed by Tōu Ake Mana and later Moana.

Research

The information on this site grows from research with rangatahi, whānau and kaimahi about the mahi that makes the most difference when working alongside rangatahi.

This mahi is called relationship-based practice (RBP) or relational practice.
